Where do you buy Crystals?
« on: March 09, 2005, 07:40:04 PM »
I would like to buy a crystal, but I am not sure what type of store sells them.  Can you throw any names at me.  I live in Maryland and work in Washington, DC.

Any suggestions?

Kathy,

As Em pointed out, online stores are available.......just google "crystals" and loads of links will come up.

If you want to personally choose your crystal then try a new age, goddess type store.  I know when I was in Fla I looked under new age in the phone book and found a couple that were quite good.

Hit the yellow pages ;D

There are, as indicated, many places online that sell decent stones. Always cleanse your stone after getting it. I have gotten a few negative ones recently and have heard many stories from my brother who works with stones on a regular basis for his arrow head business.

To find them locally you can of course look for a holistic or new age store. One thing to keep in mind these are going to be higher priced than one that you get from Lapidary's. Look in your phone book for local Lapidary's (stone stores), you're going to find a better selection at a much lower price.

On average I found in my area a good stone about 1" in size runs about $1.50 (amethyst, quartz, tiger's eye, obsidian etc). On the higher end I've seen them about $5 a stone. I've not seen anything much more expensive unless you run across a pure crystal/stone such as a peridot with very few inclusions.

Be careful of buying online the bulk stones. I had an experience a few weeks ago where I bought a pound of assorted stones, turns out about 70% of them were nothing more than chips. I did get two really nice amethyst's out of the deal but it wasn't worth the $20 I paid. Nearly 50% of the stones were citrines. I went to a local store and got the same stones in a much larger size that were polished for much less money.

Good luck

Thanks for the advice.  I know have something to go by..... holistic, new age, Lapidary, etc.

One more question.  When you all found (the perfect) stone for yourself.  Did you feel something special when you picked it up or was it just a feeling it gave you?  Did you hand get warm or something.  Do tell.

I am really going into this with blinders.....

When I am in a shop I do feel something. Generally all stones will be quite cold from just laying there. But when I pick up something that is worthy it will heat up immediately, sometimes I'll feel a charge with it as well. I will close my eyes during this process.

Best advice would first go to the stones are are immediately attracted to, chances are it's something you need. If they are in a bin then start picking them up one by one comparing them, I really believe you will know when it's the perfect stone or crystal. Use your non dominate hand, if you are right handed use your left and vice versa. I am not sure why this works this way but it was how I was taught, I can really tell a difference between the hands.
Once you've gotten the stones you are attracted to then look at the remainder keeping in mind their potential properties and repeat the process by feeling them. You might get a funny look or two from folks but that's OK because chances are you are purchasing them for something they just simply don't understand :)

Hi Kathy,

Recently, I bought a nice quartz crystal from a place on the internet called Majestic Quartz. They got it to me very quickly and it was just as indicated by the picture. I traded some emails with them and they were very nice. Their website can be reached by clicking Majestic Quartz.

Not all stones have to be bought. My personal stone is, well, an ordinary looking white stone.
I drove out to post a letter, left the car, got back minutes later and there was this stone next to the front wheel. I picked it up and forgot about it. In the evening I put it on a light box and The veins inside the stone look like a curled up foetus. I work with him on childhood trauma issues and consider him a good friend. He also gets reiki on a regular basis.
What I meant to say is that it might be worth the while to look closely at stones that appear in your life.
warmly

Thanks Tara,

That reminds me of this rosary that came across my path when I was walking to the metro garage where I park.  It was right by my vehicle so I picked it up.  I felt that was a symbol too.
