Why isn't Reiki working for me?
« on: August 15, 2010, 10:10:31 PM »
This is my first posting , so bear with me please .
1) I am a Reiki level 1.   I was attuned by the same master twice within a year. During and after both attunements I felt absolutely nothing, neither physically nor emotionally.
2) The master didnt' give me materials or guidelines, except few sheets from Dian Stein book showing placement of hands. I did a lot of reading and research on my own, and I have more than basic knowledge.
3) I practised Reiki for sometime on myself and others, but neither I nor the others felt the energy or felt better afterward. After a while I got discouraged , felt stupid and stopped.
4) I'm aware that some people will not feel any tingling or the energy, but it's very important to me to feel 'something'
5) I tried to find another Master, however, there is no Reiki community or  masters where I live. I had to go out of town for my first attunement.
6) Can someone please tell me why I am unable to channel the energy? Do I have blockage? Do I need another attunement?  what can be done? I am very very eager to do Reiki and  hope that someone can  help me . Thank you.

Hi Janetta,

Comon consensus seems to be that if you can't feel anything it doesn't mean that Reiki isn't being channelled, it just means that the process occurs outside your current level of personal awareness. As to reason others you've treated aren't feeling anything either  - that also could be down to their current level of awareness, or some interpersonal reasons.... or... without some kind of controlled experiment it is impossible to say...

Often it's recommended to practice energy excercises... Yoga (you could begin with Pranayama), Qigong etc... to increase energy sensitivity.

Could I ask, what do you think is going on here? What do you beleive is the cause of what you're describing?

1) Where did you get your "more than basic knowledge.?"

2) How did you go about trying to find a "Reiki Comminuty" where you live?

3) What do you expect to feel?

Now.  Forget those questions for awhile and leave the computer.  Sit down in a comfortable chair and gently place your hands together in your lap, palm to palm, fingertips, to fingertips (prayer position).  Clear your mind, then express the thought one time, reiki flow between my hands.  Then allow your focus to remain on your hands, expecting nothing but the sensation of one hand gently touching the other.  Stay in that position for a few minutes, or as long as you wish after a few minutes is over.

Let us know what you experience.

Thank you both for your reply.
Let me begin by answering Strawberry's questions:  (1)  I realize that reiki is a very subtle energy and  sometimes may not be felt by the practioner, but still it works. I don't understand  your comment that  the level of awareness of the friends I treated has to do with them not feeling anything . My understanding is that Reiki flows and goes to where it is needed, as long as the person has agreed to receive the energy, regardless of whether that  person is developed spiritually or mentally or has any awareness. can you please explain.  (2) I really don't know what is going on ,  I have read that if some of your chakras are blocked that stops the energy from flowing,.  so is that true? could that be a  reason  why I don't feel anything?
Hi Biminidave and thanks for your advice.
1) my modest knowledge  on Usui Reiki comes from reading  a lot books and  articles ,and  visiting websites like this one.
2) the internet is a powerful tool  to find anything.. I did  a search to find Reiki teachers, etc.. in my area and there were none.
3) What do I expect to feel:  I expect the minimum---  Physically, It would be nice to feel even a tingling in the hands. as  We live in a physical world and use our senses to identify and feel our surroundings.  Some people say that their hands become so hot, (my hands are always cold) others say that they feel tingling, . Emotionally: I'd like to feel relaxed after a treatment. -
I will practise the exercise you suggested for a couple of days and let you know. Thanks  a lot  for taking the time to reply.

Janetta,

You're right that the Internet is a powerful tool, but it's not the only tool.  Depending on the size of the city in which you live (no, i don't want to know where you live) it may not even be a good tool.

The city I live in has a population of just over 50,000.  There are probably 20 different master/teachers and a whole lot of lower level practioners here, but until about a year ago none of us had established an official web presence.  At this time there's a small group of folks who've put together a little healing and training center.

The rest of us are still practicing with our friends, families, people who are referred to us, and other Reiki practitioners we've met in town.

Use the original Internet to make your local connections.  Open the telephone book and check out the massage therapists ads.  You'll probably find some of them offer Reiki.  Most Reiki practitioners are at least a little friendly and will be glad to chat and refer you to other Reiki people if they have time, and some of the massage therapist's are even master/teachers.....  you'll never know unless you give them a call.

Hi Janetta

You seem to have answered your own initial question. You entitled your thread:--- "Why isn't Reiki working for me? " --- and yet you've stated :

I don't understand  your comment that  the level of awareness of the friends I treated has to do with them not feeling anything . My understanding is that Reiki flows and goes to where it is needed, as long as the person has agreed to receive the energy, regardless of whether that  person is developed spiritually or mentally or has any awareness. can you please explain.

What I meant by 'awareness' is that 'full awareness' or 'enlightenment' is something we all have at all times, it isn't grown or developed or made bigger, it's always there in fullness, but we experience different levels of awareness and as such experience 'awareness' to varying degrees. A simple physical example of 'awareness' would be - you're in the supermarket reading the back of a packet, deciding if that product would be right for you, on turning round to put the packet in your trolley you bump into someone directly behind you who is scouring the shelves - the person was always 'there' - just as Reiki is 'there' (in you and your friends), you were just not 'aware' of the fact.

I don't understand  your comment that  the level of awareness of the friends I treated has to do with them not feeling anything .

BTW, I actually mentioned your own and your friends level of awareness.

I really don't know what is going on ,  I have read that if some of your chakras are blocked that stops the energy from flowing,.  so is that true? could that be a  reason  why I don't feel anything?

I guess we've already established that you understand the Reiki is there and is working, so I guess more pertinent questions to ask would be: What drew you Reiki in the first place? I would guess that you thought/felt that you 'needed' it? Do you have any difficulty 'feeling' anything in life generally?

Hi Strawberry:  Thanks for the clarification.
I was drawn to Reiki because I wanted to use it to help and/or teach  others.  I am not interested in making money out of it - I just would like to share it with whoever needs it.

Hi Biminidave; thanks for the tip..  I guess I have to do a search ' the old fashioned way' --  :)  get the yellow pages and start calling, and hopefully will find some reiki practitioners.

I'm doing the simple exercise (putting my hands together ) and will let you know in a week how it's going.

If you have any other comments/remarks please share them with me.  Knowledge is the one  thing that we can never get enough of .
thanks

I suppose the good news is - you don't neccessarily have to 'feel' it to share/help/teach others.... you know it's there.

Take Care ;)

Hi - let go of your expectation.  Imagine putting your expectation into a box whilst you are using and working with reiki.  Your expectation may be hindering your enjoyment of reiki.  Some people feel, see, hear etc - others do not and that is perfectly normal and okay.  Every one is different and learning to accept what reiki is for you is one of the most important lessons. You have been attuned to reiki 1 - reiki will therefore flow when you switch it on.  Work on yourself daily and practice on other people.  Embrace nothingness where it is and accept feedback from the people you are working with.

Have you had a reiki treatment from some one else? It would be something you may enjoy if you haven't had one recently.

Can you join a reiki share group locally.  You will then be able to get practice adn ask your questions in a safe environment and share your experiences - whilst making new friends (which is always a bonus).

The important thing is to understand what reiki feels like to you.  I use to be incredibly hung up on not feeling, seeing, hearing etc and since I have stopped worrying about it - I am loving reiki so much more.  Find your niche and work in this area.  good luck and enjoy :D

Hello Shinto and thanks for your remarks. I appreciate all the feed back and I do  accept it.

to answer your questions: I havent' had a reiki treatment from anyone, and basically that is due to the fact that I haven't found any reiki practitioners in my area.  I  am looking for them  but no luck so far.

I am working only myself at the moment  and progress is slow but steady.
thanks again.

Hi janetta, the usual consensus is that even though you do not feel the energy you are still attuned.  But I would like to offer a different possibility.
Not everybodies path is the same.  Not everybody is intended to be attuned to reiki.  Yes it is an amazing gift.  But remember that even though a master had completed the attunement, you may not have received it.  The reason may be due to the higher self. Since it is the higher self that decides if and when you become a reiki channell. And since this is the case it may not be part of this life plan but instead a different path has been agreed (by yourself/divine).

though im not quite seeing this, instead what may be occuring is that you have received the attunement, but it is being held back by your higher self, almost like being in reserve, until you are ready, as there is something you need to learn, a life lesson which will help you spiritually grow and evolve. Examine your thoughts and feeling about reiki, not just about receiving the attunement but also with regards to healing others. look deep and honest, question yourself calmly, careingly and i think you will find an answer.  Sometimes the higherself as an aspect of the divine may do something like this not to hurt as this is never its intentions but to teach you something big, a realization perhaps.  Have you tried contacting your higher self, even by dowsing, maybe, this is all that is needed? the realisation perhaps that there is a greater part of you a fantastic part of you just waiting to be aknowledged. This doesnt mean that you  probably know in your head that it exists, but to know and aknowledge in your heart.

Accept your Divine Nature,

and i think you will be surprised.  This information i have been guided to give you, by my higher self.
I hope this helps

Hi Jan and all :)

I'm sorry I'm on the go and have little time to read previous replies so please excuse me if I'm redundant :)

This is my first posting , so bear with me please .

6) Can someone please tell me why I am unable to channel the energy? Do I have blockage? Do I need another attunement?  what can be done? I am very very eager to do Reiki and  hope that someone can  help me . Thank you.

1) this might be only particular to the system I'm attuned to, but in my experience so far, every teacher I had told me not to try and work on people until I got to level III.
The reason for this is that getting attuned a couple times just clears the pathways and prepares yourself to feel and channel reiki.
A level One isn't really prepared to help anyone. Especially of you can't feel it, it's hard to stay confident enough that others will. So I wouldn't worry there.
In my case I felt it straight away because I had energy background in other styles.
Many people feel nothing at all, some cry their guts out, some get sick from the detox cleansing, etc.

2) it's either a bad teacher, OR he didn't feel you needed any guidance or material untilyou had completed the whole attunement.
twice in a year as you said, should be more like "three times in less than 6 months" in many schools.
For example, in many styles, the first attunement doesn't even give access to reiki per se, as it doesn't go all the way to the Heart Chakra.

3) yes, not surprising. You're either not ready, or just lacking confidence.
Although if I may, and no offense intended, but you said you were drawn to reiki because you wanted to help others... and yet I can't feel any motivation behind the disappointment.
My intuition might be way off here, but most people who start reiki or alternative healing arts do it either because they need healing themselves or for someone close who does.
Plus a good deal of curious people of course.
The NEED usually beats the doubts or lack of feedback. Not judging or berating, mind you.
Just feeling a small lack of actual need/motivation that usualy fuels the practice.

4) yeah that's a tough one because you need to believe to some degree that it's working even though you have no feedback. The Key is either to try and not care (no expectations as someone said) or to try a small trick, go to a chi kung beginner class and try and feel Chi first.
That should give you an idea of what reiki might feel like.

5) don't worry about that :)  Online attunements work fine, even those for a few bucks on Ebay work great. You know why? Simply because a reiki "master" just offers an opportunity for yourself to reconnect, or become aware of the connection, with the Source of reiki and everything else there is. So even in the case the ebay reiki master is a scam, your lying on your bed waiting for the attunement and WANTING to get attuned will work just as well.
I got a few of those out of curiosity for 5 to 12 US dollars, and enjoyed all of them :)

6) you have no blockages per se because those usually create friction and friction translates into strong sensations during attunements. So I'd say the opposite, you're probably clean and balanced already.  Maybe your nervous system needs more time to start feeling subtle energies, maybe you just need to relax into it.
A couple more attunements should certainly help. People here can help with that :)
I suggest you start by working with reiki as a sort of Light rather than something that can be "felt". Also if you're eager to use it, just spend A LOT of time everyday in a quiet state of mind, asking to be attuned, wishing you were already attuned, knowing that you already are.
It's like prayer. Start by stating "thank you for attuning me", removing any factors that might make it sound like it's going to happen "later".
You are already there, until the moment you accept it.
Now it doesn't mean beginners can take in as much energy as advanced practitioners. That's why we need some attunements.
Also one more thing, sometimes reiki takes time to be felt... a traditional session is up to one hour where the healer blasts energy non-stop...
most beginners spend what? 2-3min of intense focus and then lose confidence.
It gets faster with time but might require 20-30min in peace and silence at first :)

good luck :)

I left a reiki link from this post to myself, so if you feel like giving it a shot, you can just wish (in peace and silence) to access my energy core and see what happens :)
Or anyone else reading this lol
But remember, expectations enable disappointment. :)

Janetta,   Then Its time to discover beliefs that may or may not be true.  "Reiki is working if.........."  This should be interesting !  Fill this one out over and over again.  "Reiki is working if.........." Writing at least some of them down or all works well so you can review them.  Crossing them out or throwing them away works to release them.  Some people do fine just mentally or any way that works for them to illuminate, review, revise their beliefs.  It helps bring out unconscious beliefs and helps weed out untrue/usefully ones.

That is an interesting aspect  . You’re right-  sometimes we are not meant to attain certain things in life—wealth, beauty, health  etc…   or  not meant to acquire certain knowledge , either because it is not in our ‘sacred contract’  or because we need to learn a lesson  or balance a karma.   Is that the case with me?  only time will tell .  Thank you for that input. I will  think deeply about it...

mmm, I have to disagree strongly with JoJo...

the simple fact that you feel drawn to reiki means that it is something you have to or can get in touch with in this lifetime.

Moreover, Reiki works with everyone who gives it a try, without exception. Why? because we ARE energy, just like everything else, and "doing" or "accessing" reiki is just a trick to awaken to higher vibratory level while being in this physical reality, without "ruining" the scenario/template.

IF her higherself had decided for whatever reason that she wasn't to do reiki, then she would have never discovered it, or would not have felt drawn to it.

The idea that the higherself might do something like "watch but don't touch, touch but don't taste,.." is a human rationale based on ego fear.
It's far too limitating and restictive to originate in the higherself.

Reiki is not like music, painting or art... I would know for I have zero artistic skills however I try and practice. But reiki is a whole other thing, it's a part of our essence, of what we are.

Higherselves don't do that kind of things, such as allowing you to go all the way to an attunement, to then tell you "tsktsk, not for you!"

What MIGHT be a "lesson" to be learned here, is the need for instantaneous results or lack thereof. THAT can very well be a higherself inspired lesson. But noticed the difference in guidance and end result: just saying "no reiki for you!" doesn't achieve anything except making the "lower" self feel tiny and powerless. While not allowing instant feedback, on the other hand, drills and trains patience and confidence.

Be always aware of how the vibration feels... if it's globally restricting or scary, it's ego based, because the ego is afraid of your growth.

Also this age we live in, is marked by the recurring theme of "waking up"... it's one of the main incarnational scenarii being experienced by people like us who gather in such places.
We've had more than enough lives on Earth to experience limitations, disease, pain, childbirth and the whole bundle. Now is a unique time where we can all experience what "ascended masters" have done in their times: wake up to our universal reality despite being surrounded and blinded by the Veil of Forgetfulness since birth. Coming across energy systems like reiki is one of the "paths" to awakenning commonly experienced, and one of the most powerful due to its oh-so-short discovery period and incredible learning curve.
There's no valid reason beyond pure free will for not allowing one's lowerself to remain behind while watching others enjoy reiki. It IS a possible scenario of course, but I'd say very improbable in these particular times, imo.
I hope this helps :)

Hi AmonRa:
Thanks for the comprehensive reply.Allow me to reply to your comments and pardon the details:

 1)  I totally agree with you that a Level  One  is not prepared to heal/or help others.   I think it is only a stepping stone, and that with each level  you get more grounded & attuned.   It doesn’t make sense that  Level One can do what Level  2 or 3 do.    Healing ( in the sense of curing)   was never my intention . I would never consider  myself  a ‘healer’  per se even if I were a fully fledged ‘master’ with 30+ yrs experience.     What is the definition of a ‘healer’?  What makes a person a healer???’.  I believe that I’m just a channel for the energy, I don’t own it. When I did Reiki on some friends & myself,  my  intention was  NEVER   to heal  , diagnose or  impress  etc….    the intention was that  ‘may the energy  work for their highest  good’ .  My only expectation was minimal-  that they /and I might  feel  relaxed  afterward  and nothing  more  as you would feel relaxed after a massage .     After each session,  I and they they felt  nothing /no  change whatsoever , actually that they were bored!      (so much for my self confidence) .  I thought that our intention / wish to help or do good  creates an ‘energetic’ connection  or an opening that allows energy to easily flow thru us to the person in need .
2.  The teacher didn’t give me any material because she didn’t have any manuals or handouts- just explained a little . I had  already read  books and  articles  before the attunement so I  had some knowledge.   Is she a bad teacher? I don’t know..  How can you be a bad teacher? ??  She is more into shamanism than reiki . (I was the only student during the first attunement ; during the second attunement there were 2 of us only )
3.  We all have a motivation for everything we do. Some do Reiki due to  physical ailments, emotional problems, certain  need, etc..I was sort of ‘guided’ to it. in less than 2 weeks , I came across  magazine articles re Reiki , TV interviews on reiki and reiki books  in the bookstore were literally dropping in my lap.   I got interested in  Reiki because of its simplicity, purity and uncomplicated, effortless means of sharing it.  Here was  another  great  free gift from God or Universe  . So I decided to study it and become a Master to share this gift .  I knew that   when you “heal”  or help  others you are also “healing”  or helping a part of youself –  for  giving  is  also an act of receiving  if our motivation is to better others .
4.  Yes, I need a positive feedback, and I need to “feel” something. When we’re learning  something new, we take small steps and need some kind of  evidence that we’re doing it right.    I am sort of on my own.   I keep looking.for other practitioners.
5.  You say a couple more attunements should certainly help me..    So you think I should be  re attuned ? - Well , I am willing. – I’m offered re attunement and accept it  ? .     I guess it doesn’t  hurt  to be attuned “    10 times”  to First Degree !!!!  If I keep on like this, I will  soon be listed  in the Guinness book .  !!  :)
Thank you so much for your suggestions.
I am very thankful to everyone who took the time  to reply and give me some advice,  and share their expertise and knowledge with me.  I am pleased that the subject sparked off interest from a lot of members, and I hope that others would find this information beneficial…  the process of  learning is endless.

Hi Jan :)

sorry to post twice in a row, I was following up on JoJo's when I got your post :)

I'll reply in random order to keep it short :)

Yes, getting reattuned a few times is never a bad thing.

In fact I got reattuned to all the self-attunements I did alone just to be sure :)
I also got attuned to various styles, just to see what they felt like.
You have to understand that their is two types of reiki:
1)a frequency particular to a school, emulated from master to student since the founder, while trying reaaaal hard to keep it "similar" to the master's energy sensation.
2)frequencies heavily "altered" or "personalised" by the channel, which usually end up feeling quite different from that "school" reiki sensation.

Both are okay. In fact, I consider that trying to emulate forever the exact sensation provided by one's master is impeding personal growth. So everytime you get attuned or receive reiki, there's a good chance that it will feel quite different, even inside a particular traditional school.
From that point of view, getting "touched" by a lot of practitioners, even remotely, is a good experience that gives a broader understanding and repertoire.

You don't need 30 years to be a healer... you just need to believe in what you do, have a daily energy and fitness routine to keep YOU healthy and efficient, and yes, doing reiki on others also works you out. In fact, if I heal with Chi, I get tired, If I heal with reiki, I can go on all day, and even do 4-5hours massages non-stop without even feeling muscle aches.

Your comment about getting drawn toward reiki in a couple weeks confirms what I expressed in my post 5min ago: it's way too synchronistic to end with a dead-end "some people are just not meant for reiki". Uhu, no way. The universe doesn't do useless random things. There's always purpose whether we see it or not.

Your attuner doesn't sound very proficient or experienced.
I remember an interesting shamanistic attunement, it felt very powerful even all the way from America, but also felt "brutal" or "primal", whereas reiki is smooth and "caring".
I still enjoyed the experience though.

Feedback is important, but the obvious lack you have experienced might be pinpointing an issue you have to work on. Is that lack of tangible results also showing in other areas of your life?
Because that's how the higherself educates.

Also, your "bored" friends don't really sound like the ideal test subjects LOL
I suggest you try on napping cats and dogs, or try and do palm over palm reiki games with kids (pets/kids very sensitive). Whatever comes to mind.
You can charge your water everyday. Charge one bottle, leave the other, and then check the taste. Reiki even works on objects like computers.

Also, as Narupa wisely stated, humans are beliefs creatures. If there is a belief in your system that is counterproductive, it can easily act as a blockage.
Try to relax, meditate if you can, and clearly tell you higherself that you have experience that lack of results well enough, and that you do not believe you require it any longer.
Mind you, the higherself communicates through images rather than words, so the best way to get the point across is a mix of imagination and strong feelings.
So for example, rather than just saying "let me experience reiki!", also see yourself experiencing it, and FEEL yourself happy and excited as you're feeling the energy flow in that imagined scene.
That's what the higherself understands best, and that's what the universe considers an official order(as in The Secret).

have fun :)

Hi AmonRa:  Sorry for the late reply, but I am also ‘on the go’ and don’t check my messages regulary.
To answer your question, I don’t have any religious beliefs that may inhibit the reiki practice. I am a very open minded person and believe that we are all in the religion or faith that best suits  our   current  life journey.     We are all  at the level where we need to be. As a matter of fact,  the study of comparative religion is  one of my  interests.
Perhaps the wonders of reiki are still  hidden  from  me because I need to seek and find something, or learn a lesson,  something which  will be slowly revealed to me, during my reiki journey.
I appreciate all of your ideas, I am actually doing what Biminidave , Strawberry, Naropa and you  all had suggested. and I am learning new things every day.
Yes, you're right, imagining and feeling the end result of your 'desire' brings it into manifestation.   this Secret  has always  been known  but not applied by most of us.   May be it will take me longer to get to where I need to be, but I will definitely get there.  Sometimes, the journey itself is just as important and exciting as the destination.  :)

Hi Jan :)

Sorry for the sloppy quote:

To answer your question, I don’t have any religious beliefs that may inhibit the reiki practice. I am a very open minded person and believe that we are all in the religion or faith that best suits  our   current  life journey.     We are all  at the level where we need to be. As a matter of fact,  the study of comparative religion is  one of my  interests.

I believe you might be slightly confusing "beliefs" and "religious beliefs" :)
Narupa meant beliefs or social conditionning such as "I won't be able to fully experience reiki until I [insert reason here]".
For example in my case, I had for a long time the wrong belief that "I couldn't do a good healing job unless I was feeling in top condition on the day of the healing".
Which is just something I conditionned myself to believe and has no real influence on reiki or my skills at channeling it, or any real impact on the healee either.

I think that's the kind of limitations Naropa meant. Religious beliefs work in similar ways but are more obvious, hence easier to spot. These untagged beliefs we're talking about are tougher to notice and locate, and yet they dictate how we perceive the world and  behave in it.

end quote:

haha, that's exactly the kind of self-restricting belief we're discussing :)  Be careful not to over-analyse the situation to the point of slowing down the momentum.
"maybe's" and "perhapses" might sound benign and just like hypothetis intros, but in truth they set you in a mind state that says this or that might be a limitation on your abilities.
Also if it pleases the logical mind, it's very easy to fall into the trap of "yes, that must be it!".
Bam, limitation activated.
Desire is key, you have free will, so just have a written discussion on paper with your higherself, asking to remove all limitations. If it still doesn't work, locate remaining beliefs, doubts and fears, and pluck them one by one. :)
Also remember you're free to go sexual harassment on my ethereal butt and connect to my reiki core anytime you feel like it. Just slip into a relaxed state, and use my name to connect to it. You can ask for healing energy, attunement, for help from my guides or whatever excites you at the time :)

Yes, you're right, imagining and feeling the end result of your 'desire' brings it into manifestation.

end quote:

yes, desire is the key and fuel. That's why half-baked motivation usually doesn't lead far.
Also once you're used to feeling the energy cursing throughout your system, you'll notice that doing some energy thingy, and seeing yourself doing it inside your head usually has the same sensation feedback, or in some cases, seeing yourself doing it is even stronger/more
efficient. So Desire, Want and Need are your friends :)

quote:

May be it will take me longer to get to where I need to be, but I will definitely get there.

end quote:

good attitude but there's that limitatinf belief again. It's very discreet but efficiently limitating nonetheless.

"Sometimes, the journey itself is just as important and exciting as the destination.  :)"

you can say that again :)
Destination is like Perfection: once you get there, there's nothing else to do but set a new goal, so there really is only the journey :)

I second this.

Practice! Practice! Practice!
